Washington, D.C. – The National Association for Veteran Rights (NAVR) continues to lead the charge in strengthening protections and expanding access for Veterans seeking benefits. With Indiana Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs), including representatives from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), acknowledging the importance of Indiana House Bill 1670 (HB 1670), momentum is growing for this critical legislation to ensure Veterans have the right to choose trusted private assistance when filing disability claims.
For too long, outdated policies have limited Veterans’ options, making the claims process more difficult and less transparent. HB 1670 introduces important safeguards to uphold ethical standards, enhance accountability, and protect Veterans from exploitation.
Key provisions of HB 1670 include:
- Protecting personal data by prohibiting international call centers and data storage facilities.
- Ensuring transparency and accountability by restricting unauthorized access to financial, medical, and benefits-related records.
- Reinforcing trust through mandated background checks for individuals handling sensitive Veteran information.
“The recognition from Indiana’s VSOs reinforces what we’ve been fighting for all along—Veterans deserve more choices, better protections, and greater transparency when filing disability claims,” said Peter O’Rourke, President of NAVR. “This bill establishes safeguards and ensures that those assisting Veterans are held to the highest ethical and professional standards. HB 1670 is a win for Veterans, their families, and the integrity of the benefits process.”
During a January 30, 2025, legislative hearing, a VFW representative affirmed, “On behalf of VFW in the State of Indiana, we fully support this bill.”
A statewide VSO representative emphasized, “I stand before you today to express my strong support for House Bill 1670, the Veterans Empowerment Act. I represent the big four: the American Legion, VFW, DAV, and National Guard Association…I want to thank the authors and the cosponsors; [this bill] is just wonderful.”
NAVR remains committed to ensuring Veterans maintain control over their claims process while receiving the highest standard of assistance. As HB 1670 moves through the Indiana State Legislature, NAVR will continue advocating for reforms that put Veterans above bureaucracy, outdated restrictions, and special interests.
